What differences can the BMT and it’s services make to the lives of local people?
“Bringing out the artist in everyone.” TVAF believe that creativity is a skill anyone can learn to use, which is why we provide educational art experiences to help a diverse range of people discover the value of their creative skills. As well as empowering individuals, these art experiences and cultural opportunities enrich the economic, social, and environmental health of our communities. This is why we award grants, in order to nurture local talent and encourage a proliferation of cultural events. We also aim to make sure artists and performers receive the support they need to do their work – we value the artist as much as the arts. The concept of our Arts Bus enables TVAF to deliver these values to potentially every resident of the Test Valley area.
The Test Valley is a decidedly rural area and transport links can often be poor or non-existent. It can be very difficult for some residents to get involved in their local culture as they cannot travel to larger towns and cities where most events and activities happen. The area also has an ageing population, many of whom may not be able to travel very far from their home. Various educational institutes also populate the area, including primary schools, secondary schools, colleges and schools for those with special needs or abilities. Again, many of these are located in rural areas and young people and their families can often be in as much danger of becoming isolated as the elderly.
The re-homing and conversion of a disused mobile library bus will be able to help TVAF make sure that those who live within the Test Valley area have easy and frequent access to the arts, improving quality of life for all.
The bus can readily be used in conjunction with the well established educational arts programmes of CAS, such as their successful Educational Project Residency and Arts Award projects, giving many disadvantaged young people the opportunity to gain qualifications to benefit their education. The BMT is an ideal ‘vehicle’ for extending this important educational work.
